Land Acknowledgement
I wish to acknowledge this land on which I live, work, learn and play in Tkoronto, on this portion of Turtle Island (North America) that we now call Canada. Since time immemorial (in the distant past), Indigenous peoples have not only inhabited this land, but they have thoughtfully cared for it and its’ creatures within. For thousands of years this land has been the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, and it is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. I also acknowledge that Tkoronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit.
I honour and respect that Tkoronto is situated on land protected by the ‘Dish With One Spoon’ wampum agreement between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee Indigenous peoples. This agreement requires them to share the territory and protect the land in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect, while inviting any subsequent newcomers to do the same.
As a settler (non-Indigenous, newcomer) living, working, learning and playing on this land, I am committed towards continually improving my own understanding of Indigenous peoples, their cultures, and their histories, while also taking responsibility for our history of injustice, racism and the decimation of many communities, culture and land.
My hope is to also be a good ancestor, which means that I am fully committed to respecting & caring for this land, its peoples & creatures throughout my life, so that all of our future ancestors will understand & appreciate the history, be able to revel in its beauty, and protect it going forward.
